The Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh and the UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi today jointly launched the landmark unique identification programme in Tembhli village in Nandurbar tribal district of Maharashtra . Both the leaders handed over Adhar UID numbers to ten villagers. Ranjana Sonawane of Tembhli village becomes first Indian to get UID number. Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister said that this ambitious scheme is a big effort for the welfare of the common man. He said that this will enable the weaker sections of society, the people belonging to scheduled castes and scheduled tribes and the women to benefit from the various government schemes and make them partners in India's developmental programme. In her speech, Mrs. Sonia Gandhi said that the scheme will strengthen the downtrodden and marginalised sections of society.The 12-digit UID number will be a link to all the demographic details and bank accounts so that the people can get the benefits of various government schemes.
