A floating library has been launched at Sundarbans in South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal for people residing on the fringes of the Mangrove Forest. A local NGO in collaboration with the West Bengal Sarva Siksha Mission has launched the first of its kind floating library on a motorized boat. The library is now catering to the needs of 14 islands in the Patharpratima block of Sundarbans with around 10 thousand books supplied by the Sarva Siksha Mission. According to Mr. M.A. Wahab Chairman of the Southern Health Improvement Samity-the NGO who is providing the service to islanders said that the library is having books both for reference and texts up to the Secondary level with reading and lending facilities.AIR correspondent reports that Siksha Bandhus attached to the district Sarva Siksha Mission who hails from the islands are working as the link between the library and the villagers to inform them about the date and time of arrival of the library at a particular island. The motorized boat on which the floating library is working donated by the noted French writer Dominique Lapierre and it is anchoring at one island every week at Patharpratima block to serve villagers.
