Union power minister Sushilkumar Shinde said that each state should generate electricity of its own. He was speaking at a symposium to mark the birth centenary of Maharashtra's first Chief Minister Y B Chavan in Mumbai today. Shinde said that India generates about two lakh MW of electricity. In the last one year, the country increased the generation by a record 20,500 MW but it is still not able to meet the demands of every state.
He said that it is a need of an hour that every state should develop its own state of art electricity generation units.
Shinde stated that currently many states have power generation units of their own but are not able to meet the demand and end up depending on the Centre to meet the shortfall.
