Union Minister VK Singh wants govt to appeal Rath verdict

Union Minister and Former Army Chief V K Singh today said the government should go for an appeal against the verdict of Armed Forces Tribunal in the Sukna land scam in West Bengal.

The Tribunal yesterday quashed the court martial of former Lieutenant General P K Rath, who was punished for his alleged role in the scam.

Talking to reporters on the sidelines of a function in New Delhi, Singh said that the verdict has pointed fingers at individuals rather than focusing on issues and it needs a re-look. He said the decision will encourage people who indulge in corruption.

V K Singh, the then Eastern Army Commander, had initiated the court of inquiry in the alleged land scam.

Meanwhile, Rath has said Tribunal's verdict giving him clean chit in the Sukna land scam has vindicated his stand. He told news agency PTI that he suffered so much because of this.

Asked on the role of former Army chief V K Singh in this case, he said he would not like to get personal saying that no person should be victimised by senior officers and the Army should ensure that it does not happen in future.
