Union Cabinet Secretary to visit Guwahati to assess the progress of major infrastructure projects today

The Union Cabinet Secretary Mr. K.M. Chandrasekhar is arriving at Guwahati this afternoon on a two-day visit of the north-eastern region to review the progress of major infrastructure projects. The Cabinet Secretary, who is likely to be accompanied by top officials, would take stock of implementation of mega projects including the national projects of the Railways, the East-West Corridor project besides the issues pertaining to the shortage of food grains and petroleum products, and implementation of Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act(MGNREGA), among others. He is likely to tour other north-eastern States during his two-day programme. Our Guwahati Correspondent reports that the visit of the Cabinet Secretary comes following complaints by several State Governments of the region over inordinate delays in execution of several vital projects including the Silchar-Lumding broad gauge conversion that would eventually connect Manipur,Mizoram and Tripura. The project is part of the overall plan to connect Bangladesh and Myanmar. Some of the other national projects including the Bogibeel bridge may also come up for discussion.
