The Union Cabinet held an emergency meeting at the Prime Minister's residence in New Delhi last night in the wake of the political crisis in Uttarakhand. Reports say Uttarakhand Governor's report on the political situation in the state was discussed during the meeting. Home Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj were among the leaders present at the meeting.

Earlier, a BJP delegation had met President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhawan and demanded imposition of President's rule in the state in the wake of a sting video of the Chief Minister. The video is allegedly showing Mr Harish Rawat bargaining with rebel Congress MLAs to support the government during the floor test. Briefing reporters, Party General Secretary Kailash Vijayvargiya, who led the delegation to the President, said, it has been proved from the video that Harish Rawat led government has reduced to minority and it has no moral right to remain in power even for a moment.

Mr Rawat has said, the CD on the alleged sting operation about the horse trading of MLAs is totally false.

Congress leader Ambika Soni, at a press conference in New Delhi said, the duly-elected government can not be pulled down by what she called farcical sting operation. She said, the Harish Rawat government enjoys majority in the assembly and it is ready to prove it.

Meanwhile, reports coming in from Uttarakhand say that Assembly Speaker Govind Singh Kunjwal has reportedly disqualified the nine Congress MLAs who had revolted against the Harish Rawat government and joined hands with BJP. The reported suspension came as the deadline to respond to the notices served by the Speaker under the anti-defection law ended last evening.
