Unified CPN(Maoist) agrees to bring its combatants under control and command of Special Committee

In a major step towards ending the stalled peace process in Nepal, the Unified CPN(Maoist) has agreed in principle to detach itself from its combatants and bring them under the control and command of the Special Committee on the integration and rehabilitation led by the Prime Minister.A meeting of the Special Committee held in Kathmandu on Thursday evening endorsed a document on the code of conduct for control and command of over 19,000 Maoist army personnel who are living in UN monitored cantonments. The meeting also decided to revamp the eight member technical committee to include one representative each from the army, police, armed police and the Maoist army that will function as a secretariat to oversee the integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants. Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Nepali Congress member of the Special Committee, Dr. Ram Saran Mahat said the combatants will come under the control and command of the Special Committee the day its secretariat begins its work and the concept of two armies will then cease to exist. Maoist member of the Special Committee Barshan Pun said it is as important steps towards integration and rehabilitation the combatants. He said a special function will be organised soon to announce dissociation of the Maoists army from the party.AIR Kathmandu correspondent reports that the decision of the Special Committee comes three days after the care-taker Prime Minister Madhav Kumar Nepal and the Maoist Chairman Prachanda signed an agreement to conclude the peace process in the next four months that paved the way for the UN Mission in Nepal to extend its mandate till January 15 next year.
