The UN Human Rights Council on Friday passed a resolution to endorse a report on the crimes committed by Israeli forces and Palestinian armed groups in Gaza and send it to the Security Council. The council in Geneva approved the resolution after two days of debate on the Goldstone report, which it had commissioned following the Gaza war early this year in which almost 1,400 Palestinians and 13 Israelis were killed. The resolution passed 25-6, with US voting against while China and Russia in its favour. Eleven countries from Europe and Africa abstained from voting. The report, released by the UN Fact Finding Mission headed by South African judge Richard Goldstone, finds strong evidence of war crimes and crimes against humanity committed by the Israeli defence forces. The report also accuses Palestinian armed groups of war crimes by deliberately targeting civilians and spreading terror through rocket attacks on southern Israel.
