UNHRC adopts US-sponsored resolution on human rights violation in Lanka, India votes in favour

The UN Human Rights Council today adopted a US-sponsored resolution on human rights violation in Sri Lanka with India voting in favour in the 47-nation strong body.While 13 countries, including Pakistan, voted against, eight member-states abstained from voting on the contentious resolution.

India pushed for new elements through written amendments calling for an independent and credible investigation into allegations of human rights violation and other accountability measures to be accepted by Sri Lanka.

In his intervention India's permanent representative at UN Dilip Sinha reiterated India's call for an credible and independent investigation into the allegations of human rights violations and loss of civilain lives. India had given 7 written amendments to the resolution which talked about other accountability measures by Sri Lanka.

External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid said that acceptable level of delivery is essential to address the ethnic issue.
