UNHC voiced alarm over escalation of violence in Bahrain

The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay has voiced alarm over the escalation of violence by security forces in Bahrain. In a statement received by Prasar Bharti in Dubai today, Ms. Pillay noted with concern on the three-month state of emergency. She reminded the authorities that fundamental rights cannot be derogated, even in a public emergency. The UN Under-Secretary-General for Humanitarian Affairs Valerie Amos also called on Bahraini authorities to refrain from excessive use of force and to respect medical facilities and ensure the treatment of wounded persons. Meanwhile, streets of Bahraini capital Manama remain calm as night-time curfew continues after a crackdown on protestors on Wednesday. Several opposition leaders have been detained after a three-month emergency was imposed in the country. Thousands of Shiite protesters rallied in the city of Karbala to show support for protestors in Bahrain. A few hundred join a similar demonstration in Baghdad. In Yemen, Security forces and government loyalists attacked protesters in different cities in an attempt to stop them from demonstrating. Protestors are calling for the ouster of long time President Ali Abdullah Saleh.
