UN votes for panel on women

The UN General Assembly has voted to set up a body that will seek to improve the situation of women and girls around the world. The new body will be known officially as the UN Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women although officials say it will be referred to as UN Women. The new body will consolidate four separate UN divisions dealing with women and gender issues. A new post of Under Secretary General will created to head the UN Women and which will become operational on January 1, 2011.
