UN sponsored peace talks between the Syrian Government and opposition resumed yesterday in Geneva to find an end to the country's nearly six-year civil war. But, the first day of peace talks have failed to bring the two sides together in direct negotiations.<br/><br/>Staffan de Mistura, the UN's special Syria envoy, met separately with the representatives of President Bashar al-Assad's Government and his opponents, but they did not speak with one another. De Mistura told both sides that they had a joint responsibility to end the conflict that had killed hundreds of thousands and displaced millions. He said the Syrian people want an end to the conflict and they are waiting for relief of their own suffering, and the dream of a new road out of this nightmare to a real and normal future in dignity. Today Mistura will hold meetings with the delegations to establish a procedure for the talks.<br/><br/>At least 300,000 people have been killed since the war began in 2011. More than 4.8 million have fled the country and a further 6.3 million have been displaced inside Syria itself.
