United Nations Special Representative for Afghanistan, Staffan de Mistura has urged all sections of Afghanistan’s lower house of Parliament to conduct themselves responsibly and avoid public unrest at any cost. Mr Staffan de Mistura met with representatives of the lower house in Kabul on Tuesday. He said Afghanistan is passing through a critical moment and it is essential that Afghans themselves reach a political solution to the constitutional impasse. An Independent Electoral Commission constituted to examine complaints of rigging in 2010 Parliament elections, has recently disqualified 62 members of Afghanistan’s lower house. This has led to tension between the Government and the Parliament. Members of Parliament are demanding interference by the United Nations in this matter. But the UN Special Representative made it clear that United Nations supports elections as part of the democratic process in Afghanistan and is not involved in addressing individual cases which should be dealt with as per the Afghan Constitution.
