Reports from Syria say that tanks and armoured vehicles have been deployed near Rastan, north of Syria's capital Damascus. Earlier, thousands of people in the north took part in protests calling for greater social and political freedom. UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has called on President Bashar al-Assad to end the six-week long confrontation with opposition supporters.
