UN Secy. Gen. expresses concern over Lanka arresting defeated presidential candidate

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed his concerns to the President of Sri Lanka about recent developments, where a defeated presidential candidate has been arrested. Ban said that he plans to dispatch his top political official to the island nation for further dialogue.A U.N. statement said that in a telephonic conversation with President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Tuesday night, Ban also agreed to send Lynn Pascoe, head of the U.N. political department, to visit the island soon after the presidential inauguration this month .The political temperature in the island nation has gone up in Sri Lanka after former army commander Sarath Fonseka was taken in the military custody on Monday on charges of engaging in politics against his president while still in uniform.Ban also pressed Rajapaksa to keep a previous commitment to make proposals for a political solution of issues with the Tamil community in the north and ensure full accountability for any human rights violations.
