UN-SC urges Iraqi Council to form democratic Government

The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) has strongly urged members of the Iraqi Council of Representatives to form an inclusive government that represents the will of the people of Iraq and their desire for a strong, independent, unified and democratic country. In a statement, UNSC has also called upon Iraqi parties to act in accordance with the constitution and in support of the national interest on this issue. Meanwhile the UN secretary general has said that while this is an issue for Iraqis to decide upon themselves, the concern is that a prolonged delay can affect the day-to-day business of government and could affect all walks of Iraqi life. The Secretary-General also called for Iraqi leaders to show a higher sense of urgency and work together to forge an agreement through an inclusive process. Mr. Ban noted that once the government formation process has been completed, it is imperative that the new government, together with the Council of Representatives and other stakeholders, make national reconciliation a priority and begin to address the many outstanding political and constitutional challenges facing the country.AIR correspondent Dushyant Ojha reports that the appeal of United Nations has come a the time when Iraqi political parties are struggling to reach a consensus to form a new government in the country, five months after parliamentary elections. The violence in the country is continuing unabated while US forces are due to end their combat operation by the end of this month and planning to leave Iraq by end of next year. In June, Iraq’s highest court certified the results of the parliamentary elections, which was held in March this year.No single party could get a majority needed to form the government. Iraqia alliance headed by former Prime Minister Iyad Allawi won 91 seats while a coalition led by Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki won 89 seats in the 325-member Council of Representatives. The INA block dominated by religious Shia parties grabbed 70 seats.
