The United Nations says, practices such as child marriage and honor killings are violating the human rights of women across Afghanistan. In a report released today, the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan urged authorities to enforce a 2009 law meant to protect women. The Law on the Elimination of Violence Against Women bars child marriage and makes it illegal to buy or sell women for marriage. The UN report said religious leaders sometimes reinforce the customs by their interpretation of Islam. But the UN called the practices inconsistent with Sharia law and the laws of Afghanistan. The report is drawn from interviews conducted this year in 29 of 34 provinces of Afghanistan.
