UN removes 14 Taliban members from sanctions list

Reports reaching Afghanistan say, the UN Security Council has removed the names of 14 Taliban members from its international sanctions list. A local television channel quoting agency sources, said the move is believed to encourage the Taliban to join the Afghan peace process. Those removed from the list include Arsalan Rahmani Daulat, Habibullah Fawzi, Sayeedur Rahman Haqani and Faqir Mohammad, all members of Afghanistan's peace council. On June 17th, the UN had split the sanctions list and separated the Taliban and al-Qaeda in order to encourage the Taliban to join the Afghan peace process. The Afghan government has repeatedly called on the Taliban to join the peace process, but the Taliban has stressed on withdrawal of all foreign forces from Afghanistan as its main precondition for any talks. Afghan government and US officials have also emphasised that the Taliban would have to accept Afghanistan's constitution for joining the peace process.
