UN prepares document for zero tolerance against terrorism across globe

The United Nations Panel on Counter terrorism has prepared a document for zero tolerance against terrorism across the globe. Panel Chairman and India’s representative in the UN Hardeep Puri told reporters that the outcome document which will review the counter terrorism co-operation in the last decade and will also work out a road map for the next ten years. Describing the document as far reaching and ambitious, Mr Hardeep Puri said it will create normative framework which will enhance the co-operation of member states on the issue of counter terrorism. Mr. Puri said there is an agreed text on comprehensive convention against International terrorism and expressed the hope that the treaty could become a reality soon. The convention provides for a legal mechanism to deal with international terrorism and translational crime. On India’s stand on the Palestinian bid for the membership of the United Nations Mr Hardeep Puri categorically stated that New Delhi will extend unflinching support to Palestinian aspiration. Replying to a question on China’s support to India for a permanent membership in the Security council, Mr Puri said he was reasonably confident that it as a matter of time before China articulates their support to New Delhi’s aspiration in more forthcoming terms. He also said 128 votes would be needed in the general assembly for the expansion of Security Council both in permanent and non permanent categories.
