The UN Security Council has extended the term of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) by four months till May 15 at the request of the Nepal government. The UN Security Council, in its resolution adopted yesterday authorised the extension of the UNMIN's mandate. Addressing a press conference in Kathmandu today, UNMIN Chief Karin Landgren said although the peace process remained fragile, the renewed urgency shown by the political parties to address the central peace process issues with the understanding reached between the government and the Maoists on having a time-bound action plan for integration and rehabilitation of the Maoist army personnel can herald a constructive stage for Nepal's democratic transition. Landgren said the Security Council has welcomed the establishment of the High level Political Mechanism aimed at building consensus and confidence among then political parties to bring the peace process to a successful conclusion and to ensure the promulgation of a constitution by May 28. The UN resolution urged all political parties in Nepal to expedite the peace process and to work together in a spirit of cooperation. AIR Kathmandu Correspondent reports that the tenure of UNMIN, that is monitoring the peace process in the country since January 23, 2007 will expire tomorrow.
