UN mission in Afghanistan relocates its foreign staff

UN mission in Afghanistan has decided to relocate around 900 of its foreign staff outside the country in wake of last week Taliban attack at a UN Guest House in Kabul which killed five UN staff. The decision follows the visit of UN Secretary General Mr. Ban Ki Moon to capital Kabul early this week where he urged Afghan government to provide better security to its staff. A press statement issued by UN office in Kabul said the move is short-term relocation while additional security is being put in place in light of last week attack as well as further ongoing threats. It expressed commitment to helping Afghanistan’s people, adding that every effort will be made to minimize disruption to UN activities. The last week attack and killing of five British soldiers by an Afghan policeman on Tuesday have generated a debate over international presence in Afghanistan. Taliban claimed responsibility for the latest attack on British soldiers creating doubts whether militants have infiltrated into police ranks. Afghan President has ordered a high-level enquiry into the killing.
