UN mission ‘ frustrated’ with Nepal peace talk failure

United Nations Missions in Nepal (UNMIN) has expressed concern over the delay in peace process even as the current extended term of the mission comes to an end on September 14. UNMIN Chief Karen Landgren held a consultations with the leaders of three major parties— the Unified CPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress and the CPN(UML) to discuss the extension of UNMIN's term from September 15. Talking to newsmen after the meeting, Chief of the UN Mission in Nepal Karen Landgren said it was very frustrating for UNMIN and for the Security Council that so little attention was being paid to the core elements of the peace process, adding that UNMIN was an expensive investment for the UN Security Council and the international community. While Nepali Congress leader Prakash Saran Mahat said it was for the Government to decide on the extension of the term of the UNMIN in consultation with political parties, Maoist leader Barsha Man Pun said his party favoured extension of UNMIN's term until the peace process was concluded adding the process of army integration and constitution drafting can move ahead simultaneously. The meeting of the UNMIN Chief with the major political parties comes amidst reports in major dailies in Kathmandu today that Nepal Army had expressed reservations over UNMIN's presence in Nepal after the end of its term in September.
