UN Mission Chief in Nepal meets Prachanda, talks current political situation

In Nepal, the Chief of the UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) Karen Landgren met the Chairman of the Unified CPN (Maoist) in Kathmandu on Sunday to discuss the current political situation and the peace process. <br/> <br/>Talking to newsmen, Langren said that Chairman Prachanda told her that a solution to the current political impasse would be found in the next few days as his party is speaking to other main parties to find a way out. <br/> <br/>She said that UNMIN has repeatedly impressed upon the Maoists that the continuous blocking of the parliament is not acceptable in a democracy. <br/> <br/>She said if this problem is resolved, there would be some forward movement in the peace process. <br/> <br/>UNMIN Chief Karen Langren recently briefed the UN Security Council on the progress of peace and constitution drafting processes in New York. <br/> <br/>The UN Mission in Nepal (UNMIN) was set up in Nepal in January 2007 with a mandate to oversee the peace process in the country after Nepal government and the former Maoists guerilla signed a peace deal in 2006 that brought to an end a decade-long civil war that claimed an estimated 16000 lives.<br/>
