United Nations has said that it is in the process of reviewing names on the blacklist for those entities which are linked to terrorist organizations like Al-Qaeda and Taliban. UN top official in Afghanistan Staffan De Mistura said that the names of 10 individuals or entities with alleged links to Taliban are being considered for removal from a U.N. sanctions list.

The names submitted by Afghan officials and vetted by a UN subcommittee, will be forwarded to the U.N. Security Council, which will decide whether to take them off the blacklist. The list has a total of 137 names and the UN official said the last date for consideration of removal of names has been extended till 31st of this month. President Hamid Karzai has pushed for the removal of some Taliban figures from the blacklist as a way to encourage militants to stop fighting and enter peace talks. The Afghan government is likely to raise the issue at Kabul conference to be participated by UN Secretary General.

Meanwhile, 28 suspected Taliban militants were released from Afghan prisons after review of their cases. The peace consultative Jirga held last month had recommended for review of detainees cases in order to promote peace talks with Taliban. The latter, however, has rejected all such offers saying peace talks are possible only when foreign forces withdraw.
