UN human rights chief Zeid Ra'ad Al Hussein has accused Maldives President of trying to destroy democracy in the country. Mr Hussein said in a statement that the suspension of several functions of the judiciary and Parliament, and the restrictions on a series of constitutional rights, create a dangerous concentration of power in the hands of the president. <br/><br/>He said President Yameen has usurped the authority of the state's rule-of-law institutions and its ability to work independently from the executive while urging him to lift the state of emergency and restore rule of law in the country.<br/><br/>The statement came as Maldives police have continued with its crackdown on opposition leaders and supporters. Police arrested Ibrahim Siyad, son of Qasim Ibrahim's who is the head of the Jumhooree Party and who was supposed to be released after last week judgment. No reason has been given for the arrest even as opposition coalition demanded his release. <br/><br/>Later addressing a press conference, a police spokesman accused former President Abdul Gayoom and Supreme court Chief Justice of trying to overthrow the government. In another development, Maldives President has dispatched special envoys to China, Pakistan and Saudi Arabia to apprise them of the ground situation in the country.
