UN, Govt., CPN sign UN monitored Action Plan for discharge of minors disqualified

In Nepal, the United Nations, Government of Nepal and the Unified CPN (Maoist) signed a UN monitored Action Plan for the discharge of the minors disqualified under the UN verification process in Kathmandu last evening. .<br/> <br/>Addressing a press conference after the signing ceremony, UN Secretary-General's special envoy for children and armed conflict Radhika Coomaraswamy said that the action plan for the discharge of the minors will be implemented from the 27th of December and will be completed within 40 days. She said the Action Plan would be monitored by the UN led team to ensure that disqualified are given the choice to partake in programmes like education, health training, business enterprise and vocational training to assist their return to civilian environment.<br/><br/> <br/>Mrs. Coomariswamy described the signing of the action plan as a historic step in Nepal's peace process and expressed the hope that it will encourage other steps to unlock the current political stalemate. She said that the Maoists would not be de-listed from the Secretary General's Annual Report for being a party to using minors in the armed conflict, if they fail to comply with the provisions of the action plan on the discharge of the minors.<br/>
