United Nations forces in western Ivory Coast are trying to protect tens of thousands of civilians who have taken refuge in a church in the town of Duekoue. About eight hundred people were killed there last week after fighting between militias loyal to the two men who claim the country's presidency, Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara. Forces loyal to Mr. Ouattara have dismissed talk of a massacre as non-sense. Meanwhile, rival forces loyal to Laurent Gbagbo and Alassane Ouattara appear to have held their positions in the main city Abidjan on Sunday after several days of intense fighting. Witnesses said Abidjan was quieter but still tense with sporadic outbreaks of gun fire in some districts.
