UN expert panel to visit Sri Lanka to meet Reconciliation Commission

The UN Secretary General's Expert Panel while making representations before Sri Lanka’s Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) will follow the usual procedures of hearing.A statement by the LLRC today said that in the event of the Sri Lankan government facilitating UN Secretary General's Panel to visit the island nation, the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) will hear such representations on the basis of its Warrant and the usual procedures followed for such hearings.The date of the visit of the UN experts’ panel to Sri Lanka is still not clear. Sri Lanka Government last week had said that it has no objection to the visit of the panel which was appointed by the UNSG to advice him on accountability issues on the last phase of war in the island nation to depose before the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission a(LLRC).In response to remarks made by the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon at his year end news conference that Sri Lanka panel of experts would visit the island nation, the External Affairs Minister in a statement had said the Government has the responsibility to facilitate their visit and the position has been conveyed to the UN.
