UN envoy says US strategy failed to end deadlock between Palestine & Israel

UN Special Coordinator for West Asia Peace Process Robert Serry has called for a ‘strategy adjustment’ in light of the persistent deadlock on the issue. According to a statement of UN, received by Prasar Bharti in Dubai today, Robert Serry said that settlements are contrary to the Road Map and international law and their continuation is causing a crisis of confidence in the effort to bring about meaningful political negotiations. Meanwhile, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has again urged Israel to fulfil its Road Map obligation to freeze all settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem. Referring to the diplomatic Quartet on West Asia, which is promoting the Road Map, Mr. Ban noted with regret that Israel has not heeded the united call of the international community to extend the settlement restraint policy. Yesterday, US admitted that after a considerable effort, it has concluded that US guarantee to pursue Israel for temporary settlement freeze does not create a firm basis to work towards the goal of a framework agreement . Palestinians said the decision is a declaration of the failure of US efforts.
