UN condemns Israeli plan to build 1,600 housing units in East Jerusalem

UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has condemned an Israeli plan to build 1,600 new housing units in East Jerusalem. A spokesman for the secretary general has said that the plan is incompatible with international law and hampers any realistic peace process.

Ban's comments came after US Vice President Joe Biden harshly condemned the plan last evening during an official visit to Jerusalem. He said in a statement, that Israel's announcement "undermines the trust we need right now".

The Palestinians have warned that the latest construction announcement could derail any attempts at indirect talks before they even begin. US Vice President Mr. Biden is scheduled to meet Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah in the West Bank on Wednesday.

The Israeli Interior Ministry announced the new units would be built in the Ramat Schlomo area of East Jerusalem. The proposed settlements would be located in an area that the Palestinians hope to make their capital.
