UN chief assures Suu Kyi that world body is committed to helping restore people's will in country

The UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has assured Myanmar's democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi that the world body is committed to helping restore people's will in her country.The UN chief's assurance came when he spoke to her by telephone yesterday. In a statement released in Washington after the telephone call, Ban's spokesperson said, the Secretary-General has told her that he was encouraged by the spirit of reconciliation emanating from her statements and appeals for dialogue and compromise following her release. The UN chief stressed the need for the Myanmar authorities to release all remaining political prisoners.For her part, Suu Kyi voiced her appreciation for the UN role in Myanmar. She said that she was looking forward to UN special Advisor's visit to her country. Nobel laureate and head of the National League for Democracy, Suu Kyi was released last Saturday after having been under house arrest for much of the past two decades.
