UN body suspends action on Myanmar’s claim

The United Nations Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf has suspended further action on Myanmar’s claim on the outer limits of its continental shelf after objections by Bangladesh. The Myanmar government had submitted their outer continental shelf claim on 16 December2008. The Bangladesh government had then sent a protest note to the Secretary General of the United Nation on 23 June 2009. In a statement issued last evening in Dhaka, the Bangladesh ministry of foreign affairs said that the commission decided to defer the matter after considering the objections raised by Bangladesh with reference to the disputed area. Bangladesh has already submitted its case before the UN tribunal for arbitration on maritime issues under the UN Convention for Law of the seas to resolve boundary issues with India and Myanmar. The Bangladesh cabinet has already approved a proposal to conduct a maritime survey at the cost 54 crore rupees and the report is likely to be presented to the UN in July 2011 to support its claim over certain blocks in the Bay of Bengal for extraction of oil and gas.
