UN appeals for aid to assist people affected by ethnic clashes in Kyrgyzstan

The United Nations has launched an urgent 71 million US Dollar appeal to assist more than one million people affected by ethnic clashes in Kyrgyzstan amid fears of fresh violence. The United Nations Chief Ban Ki-moon says, a separate appeal will be made next week for neighbouring Uzbekistan, where tens of thousands have fled from the violence. Ban cited "shortages of food, water and electricity in the affected areas, due to looting, lack of supply, and restrictions on movement" and said hospitals were running low on medical supplies.
