The United Nations General Assembly today unanimously adopted a resolution against the CIA-operated US drone strikes in the foreign territories. The resolution came amid a fiery debate over drone attacks, particularly in Pakistan, where more than 3000 people have have been killed in nearly 400 drone strikes in the tribal belt since 2004. The assembly adopted the resolution calling on the United States to comply with international law.
It is the first time that UN Assembly has expressed reservations over the drone strikes. Islamabad terms drone strikes against its dignity and sovereignty. On the other hand, Washington terms the unmanned crafts as a successful weapon in war against terrorism. In the 28-paragraph resolution, entitled Protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism, the 193-member body called for the regulation of unmanned crafts against suspected terrorists.
