The much-awaited peace talks between the Government and the outlawed United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) will take place in New Delhi today. The eight-member rebel group led by its self-styled chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa is likely to meet the Home Ministry officials to submit their charter of demands formally. The ULFA delegation is supposed to meet the Union Home Secretary R.K. Singh, Centre’s peace interlocutor P.C. Haldar and senior Ministry officials. Before departure, the ULFA Chairman Rajkhowa told newsmen in Guwahati that something positive would emerge during the first formal round of negotiation process with the Centre. AIR Guwahati Correspondent reports that over ten thousand people, mostly civilians, lost their lives in the state during fighting between government forces and the rebel groups since 1979. The Government facilitated the release of all the eight top ULFA leaders on bail from jail in order to pave the way for negotiations.
