Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said ULFA must deposit weapons and sign a deal on formal suspension of operation like other insurgent groups before the peace talks start with the state. He said the peace process with the outfit was progressing well. The Chief Minister said Centre’s peace interlocutor PC Haldar was in constant touch with the outfit’s leadership, led by its ‘chairman’ Arabinda Rajkhowa. Insurgency has been on the wane, Gogoi said, although some factions outside the talk ambit and a newly-formed outfit in Karbi Anglong were still carrying out anti-social activities. The CM was addressing a press conference at Guwahati on Friday. He informed that the State Government will carry out a special recruitment drive very soon to provide jobs to over fifty thousand educated youths approval for which is already being given. Admitting large-scale corruption and anomalies in the education department, the Chief Minister said a special drive has been launched to clean up the administration of the department. The education department recently suspended over hundred school head masters for their alleged failure to submit pay bills ofthe teachers to the government in time. He said similar drives have been taken in rural development and other key departments of the state.
