Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi has said, banned ULFA must deposit weapons and sign a deal on suspension of operations before the government starts formal peace talks with it. Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, he said Centre’s peace interlocutor P.C. Haldar is in constant touch with the outfit’s leadership, led by its ‘chairman’ Arabinda Rajkhowa.Mr. Gogoi said, insurgency has been on the wane although some factions outside the talks’ ambit and a newly-formed outfit in Karbi Anglong are still carrying out anti-social activities. He said, the State Government will carry out a special recruitment drive very soon to provide jobs to over fifty thousand educated youths.Admitting large-scale corruption and anomalies in the education department, the Chief Minister said a special drive has been launched to clean up its administration. Over one hundred school head masters have been suspended for their alleged failure to submit pay bills of the teachers to the government in time. He said similar drives have been taken in rural development and other key departments.Mr. Gogoi said, land policy is being reviewed to check misuse of Government land allotted to individuals and organizations for specific purposes. He warned that the Government will take back those land found to have been misused in the name of social services. Mr. Gogoi said a new pension scheme for the farmers will be announced soon.
