In Assam, ULFA Chairman Arvind Rajkhowa and his two associates – Raju Baruah and Raja Bora – have been remanded to police custody for 12 days. They were produced before the Kamrup Chief Judicial Magistrate Court in Guwahati yesterday amidst tight security.

A red alert has been sounded across the state to check any backlash following the arrest of Rajkhowa and his associates. Our Correspondent reports that the Centre has also asked Assam government to beef up security measures in the state.

Chief Minister, Tarun Gogoi has already favoured talks with the ULFA for a peaceful resolution of insurgency in the state. Mr.Gogoi also called upon other extremist groups to come forward for talks to resolve all outstanding issues mutually.

Meanwhile, Assam Police’s Special Operation Unit has sent to the Centre a list of the names of individuals and private firms based in Bangladesh, Myanmar, Pakistan and Nepal having links with extremist outfit ULFA. The list was prepared on the basis of the questioning of two senior ULFA leaders Sasha Choudhury and Chitraban Hazarika arrested recently.

According to official sources, these individuals and private firms are inimical to India’s interest and the listed individuals used to operate as over-ground agents for the outfit and collected several crores of rupees annually on behalf of the outfit at the instance of Paresh Baruah, the outfit’s commander-in-chief. The list also includes the names of individuals who used to facilitate other activities of the members of the outfit, especially Paresh Baruah.

However, sources stated that the arrested ULFA leaders revealed that bulk of the funds collection in Assam was done without the knowledge of the outfit’s top brass and at times even by fake ULFA cadres. Sources further divulged that the two ULFA leaders during questioning stated that they hardly kept track of the status and activities of the outfit, be it a bomb blast or the death of any of its cadres in the State. Of the two senior leaders, Sasha Choudhury, self-styled foreign secretary of the outfit, was the more important leader and had travelled to Pakistan, Myanmar and even Afghanistan at regular intervals.
