ULFA Chairman indicates its readiness for peace talks

ULFA Chairman Arabinda Rajkhowa has indicated that the banned militant outfit is ready for peace talks. He told a private TV channel in North-East on Thursday that he wants peace talks to restart and conclude. Rajkhowa told the TV Channel that he was speaking from some location in Bangladesh and claimed that reports of his arrest were aimed at creating confusion and derailing the peace process in Assam. There were reports on Wednesday that Rajkhowa had surrendered to Indian security forces in Agartala and was brought to New Delhi late Wednesday evening.

Home Minister P Chidambaram had said in Parliament on Wednesday that he was expecting a political statement from ULFA in the next few days and if it offers talks, the government will accept provided ULFA abjures violence and gives up the demand for sovereignty.
