Uttarakhand Chief Minister Vijay Bahuguna today recorded victory in Sitarganj bypolls, defeating his nearest rival BJP leader Prakash Pant by about 40,000 votes. According to Uttarakhand Chief Election officer, though the details of the results were yet to come, Chief Minister Bahuguna had maintained massive lead in all the nine rounds.
It is after a long time that the Congress has won the Sitarganj seat, wresting it from the BJP. The seat which was traditionally a BSP stronghold, was won in the last assembly polls by BJP's Kiran Mandal, who however, resigned from the assembly to felicitate Mr Bahuguna's election.
