UK MPs recommend raising Myanmar aid despite rights violation concerns

UK's MPs have recommended that government should raise its annual aid to Myanmar from 60 million dollars to 100 million dollars, despite concerns over human rights. The International Development Committee said this will help bring about reform in the country, although some critics have said giving aid was naive. A cynical attitude to change will not improve the quality of rule in Myanmar, the committee added. The European Union dropped sanctions against Myanmar last year. This was in recognition of the political reform programme introduced in the south-east Asian country, but significant international concerns remain over its human rights record. Myanmar has one of the world's least developed economies.
