The government has cleared an additional amount of over Rs 5791 crore for the 'Aadhaar' scheme to enroll another 40 crore people under the scheme.
Home Minister P Chidambaram told reporters after a Cabinet Committee meeting yesterday on the Unique Identification Authority of India, UIDAI that 20 crore Aadhaar numbers have already been allocated.
The Minister expressed hope that the entire exercise will be completed by June next year. He said, the Aadhaar Number would be applicable in the states where UIDAI had completed its exercise and the remaining states and Union Territories where the process was not complete, the National Population Register (NPR) number would be applicable.
Replying to a question, the Home Minister did not rule out little duplication or overlapping, considering the huge population in the country.
