Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs Mr V. Narayanasamy launched the Unique Identification Number (Aadhar) enrolment Project in Puducherry on Monday.Speaking at the function, he said the Union Territory is the first state in the country to integrate the Aadhar scheme with the public distribution system where in residents will be issued smart cards. He said provision of smart cards will help both the centre and state government to target welfare schemes to intended beneficiaries.For the first time in the country, the Aadhar project will cover transgenders in Puducherry and their enumeration will be complete in the first phase beginning today. The entire population of 11.52 lakhs in the union territory is proposed to be covered in three phases. Presiding over the function Lt. Governor Iqbal Singh said Aadhar project would enable the planners to precisely identify the needs of different groups of people and would ensure transparency in the implementation of Government schemes and services.
