In Kerala, both the ruling UDF and opposition LDF held a hartal on Monday in Idukki district on the Mullapperiyar dam safety issue. Apart from Idukki, mass agitations were held in different parts demanding intervention of the Centre in reducing the water level of 116 year old dam to 120 feet immediately. Protesters blocked traffic on Kollam-Theni national highway and other roads. BJP is also holding hartal on Tuesday in four districts of the state including Idukki.Both opposition leader V S Achuthanandan and KPCC President Ramesh Chennithala will be visiting Mullapperiyar dam on Wednesday. Members of parliament from Kerala held satyagraha in front of the Parliament in Delhi. Hunger strike and satyagraha by MLAs are continuing in different places of Kerala.Meanwhile, the water level of the dam built in 1895 using ancient technology, has gone upto 136.4 feet. At the same time, urging people to be calm, Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Defence Minister A K Antony said that the Centre has already intervened to solve Mullaperiyar dam issue between Tamil Nadu and Kerala amicably. A high level delegation of ministers from the state met different central ministers on Monday to sort out the issue on war footing.
