UDF, LDF observe ‘hartal’ on Mullaperiyar Dam issue

In Kerala, mass agitation on the Mullaperiyar Dam safety issue has further intensified.In Idukki district where the 116 year old dam is situated both ruling UDF and opposition LDF are observing hartal today.Hunger strike by CPI MLA Bijimol entered the second day today. Meanwhile, the water level of the dam has reached 136.4 feet due to heavy rain in Idukki and adjoining areas.Kerala Chief Minister Oomman Chandy said that Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh is convinced of the concern of the state on the safety of Mullaperiyar dam in Idukki.He expressed confidence that the issue will be sorted out maintaining cordial relation with Tami Nadu. Meanwhile, a high level delegation of ministers and scientists from Kerala will be meeting central ministers in Delhi today on the issue.Geologists point out that a series of recent tremors have further weakened the dam built in 1895.At the same time, water is over flowing through thirteen shutters of the Mullaperiyar dam. Idukki District Collector has declared a high state of alert and steps are being taken to shift people from the banks of Periyar river in case of an emergency.
