UCPN (Maoist) urges to replace 1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace & Friendship

Nepal's main opposition Unified CPN (Maoist) on Saturday stressed the need to replace the 1950 Indo-Nepal Treaty of Peace and Friendship. Talking to newsmen after an hour long meeting with the visiting Indian Foreign Minister S. M. Krishna in Kathmandu on Saturday evening, Maoist Chairman Prachanda said his party has put forward its concern on border issues including border problems at Susta and Kalapani. The Maoist Chief said his party is in favour of developing good relations with India on a more scientific and positive basis, claiming that people wanted a radical change in the society including the country's foreign policy.Prachanda said the Indian side has expressed their seriousness to address the concerns expressed by him through political and diplomatic channels. The Maoist Chairman expressed his party's desire to discuss all outstanding problems and have good relationship with India.AIR Correspondent reports that the Chairman of the Unified CPN (Maoist) and former Prime Minister Prachanda along with the Maoist foreign affairs in charge Krishna Bahadur Mahara called on the visiting External Affairs Minister at his hotel in Kathmandu on Saturday afternoon.Earlier in the day, visiting Indian External Affairs Minister S M Krishna and Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao called on the President Dr. Ram Baran Yadav and discussed issues of mutual interest including Nepal’s constitution drafting process. Mr. Krishna said he is looking forward to the Nepal President's official visit to New Delhi in February. The visiting dignitary later met Nepali Congress President Girija Prasad Koirala. Mr. Krishna is scheduled to call on the Chairman of the Constituent Assembly Mr. Subhash Nemwang on Sunday before wrapping his visit to Nepal with a press conference.
