UAE sign 20-billion-dollar nuclear contract to South Korea

United Arab Emirates (UAE) has signed a contract worth 20 billion dollars with a South Korean consortium to build nuclear reactors in the country. The contract was signed in Abu Dhabi last evening in the presence of UEA President Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and visiting South Korean President Lee Myung-bak. According to a statement of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, under the nuclear contract, the group led by Korea Electric Power Corporation (Kepco) will design, build and help operate four 1,400-megawatt civilian nuclear power units. The Chief Executive Officer of ENEC Mohammed Al-Hammadi stressed that the four nuclear plants planned by the UAE will provide 25 percent of the country's electricity demand by 2020. He said that UAE is planning to construct a fleet of nuclear power plants at different locations of the country to meet the increasing demand for electricity.
