UAE likely to continue current system of sponsorship for foreign workers

In United Arab Emirates,(UAE) the current system of sponsorship for foreign workers including Indians is likely to continue as country’s Minister of Labour Saqr Ghobash Saeed Ghobash has supported the legality of the system and called for ways to deal with concerns about its implementation. The Minister of Labour told a workshop held in Dubai that the government is open to improving systems and changing policies to boost the performance of the local economy. He added that Ministry of Labour has been trying to improve the sponsorship system and will continue to do so whenever it sees benefits from modifying the rules. He called for better partnership between the government and the private sector and more contribution from local universities to encourage local workforce in the labour market.Kuwait and Bahrain have recently scrapped the traditional sponsorship system that allows the government to have great control over the movement of workers. The Minister for Overseas Indian Affairs, Mr. Vayalar Ravi during his visit to UAE on 27th of last month had welcomed Kuwait’s decision to scrap the sponsorship system for the recruitment of foreign labour, which is heavily loaded in favour of employers.
