Israeli defence ministry in a statement said " during a one-and-a-half hour meeting Ehud Barak and George Mitchell discussed the resumption of negotiations between Israel and the Palestinians,".

Mitchell will also meet with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Palestinian president Mahmud Abbas.

Biden, will be the most senior American official to visit Israel since President Obama came to office in January 2009. The visits is seen significant following recently held Arab foreign ministers meet in Cairo in which, they have agreed to back one last round of indirect Palestinian-Israeli talks despite scepticism over Israel's readiness to revive peace efforts.

The administration of US President Barack Obama has struggled to revive talks between the Palestinians and Israel, suspended at the beginning of the Israeli offensive against Hamas in Gaza last year.
