In Japan, two workers from the stricken Fukushima nuclear plant have been contaminated by high levels of radioactive iodine. The operator of the plant Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), yesterday said the workers, reportedly men in their 30s and 40s, may have already been exposed to radiation levels higher than the recently increased official limit. TEPCO said, it had been measuring the internal exposure to radiation of all employees involved in emergency work at the Fukushima Daiichi plant that was crippled by the March 11 earthquake and tsunami. In a statement, TEPCO said the company notified the governmental atomic energy agency of the possible problem and the agency confirmed that the thyroid glands of two male employees showed high levels of radiation. The Jiji Press news agency said, the two workers had stopped working at the plant and were not sick at the moment, they are however to undergo further check-ups.
